MY 2018 Health and Fitness Goals + Past Fails

It’s that time of year again – time to reflect on the past and set new goals for the year ahead. Gyms will be packed with newcomers looking to make 2018 the year they get bigger, stronger, leaner, more fit, etc. Unfortunately, many of those people will be long gone before Feb 1st rolls around. I’ve been guilty of making the same mistake and giving up on my new year’s resolutions too. When that happens, it’s usually because I’ve chosen goals that are too ambitious and that don’t fit my lifestyle or circumstances.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said I’m going to start cooking more. If Brian reads this, he’ll be rolling his eyes. He’s the resident cook in this house. One of the reasons I consistently fail at this goal is that I’m not willing to do the prep work. I have an hour commute to work and I rarely leave by 5pm. With traffic, I don’t get home until close to 7pm and then it’s a rush to figure out dinner, get in a workout and get myself ready for the morning. If I took the time to prep meals or even just chop vegetables for the week on Sunday, I’d be in a much better place. Instead, I get stressed and I just give up, which means Brian gets stuck with cooking duty again and again.

This year, I’m taking a step back and really giving an honest look at what I’m willing (and not willing) to do. Here’s what I’m committing too:

1). Making movement a priority

Rather than say I must get in x amount of workouts or run a specific amount of miles, I’m committing to just moving more every day. Yes, I’m still aiming for consistent workouts, but more importantly I want to be conscious of not sitting too long, taking breaks from my computer, using the stairs instead of the elevator and keeping my body active. I have an Apple Watch, which keeps me accountable and makes tracking my movement super easy, so this is a goal I can realistically stick too.

2). Drinking more water

This is something I desperately need to be better at. I’m constantly dehydrated and it gives me headaches. I’ve cut way back on my coffee habit, which has helped a lot, but I still need to do a better job of drinking more water throughout the day.

3). Practicing mindfulness

I’ve always been a very anxious, high strung sort of person and too often my moods are ruled by things outside my control. I’ve been making an effort to just breathe, take moment and sit with my discomfort rather than reacting as I normally would.

What are your goals for the new year?

Life Lately: My camera, a new TV show, my workouts and more

Hi friends! Long time no see. There’s no good way to jump back to blogging after such a long absence, so I’m just going to get right into it. 2017 brought  some big changes that I’m hoping to share with you soon. Until then, let’s take a look at some of the other things I’ve been up to lately.

Barre, barre and more barre

DVDs pictured: Pure Barre Results: thighs, Barre Amped boot camp, Barre Amped cardio fat burn

I’ve been loving barre workouts lately.  I used to take Pure barre classes at a studio near my home, but it got really expensive, so I decided to invest in the Pure Barre Results series of DVDs. They’re great because you don’t need any equipment other than a light pair of weights (which I had) and something to use as a bar (either the wall or a chair works just fine). The workout I get at home is just as good as the one I used to get in at the studio. For Christmas, Brian bought me the two other DVDs featured above. They’re not exactly the same as Pure barre, but they’re close and I really like the instructor Suzanne Bowen.

Really learning to use my camera…finally

DSLR camera
Nikon D5200

I got a DSLR camera for Christmas two years ago from Brian and I have been embarrassingly lazy about learning how to use it. I can do the basics, but I haven’t taken the time to really learn all the camera can do. One of my goals for 2018 is to dive in and finally learn all about my Nikon D5200.

The Americans

I’m super late to the party on this one, but I just started watching the Americans (it’s streaming on Amazon Prime Video). I’m only two episodes in at this point, but it’s so good! I’ve seen positive reviews for the show for years, but just never got around to watching it. Since I had some downtime on New Years day, I decided to give it a try. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those series I end up bingeing.

Nail Polish

Essie Ring in the Bling

I’m currently rocking this color on my nails. It’s called “Ring in the Bling” and it’s part of Essie’s 2017 winter collection.

That’s it for today, I’ll see you all later this week.

TIU Bikini Series: Week 1

I’m a little late posting this as the second week of the challenge has already begun, but better late than never. Here we go!

The Meals

food collage

I’m a picky eater, so I was most worried about sticking to the Tone it Up meal plan, but so far it’s been pretty easy. Here’s a look at what I ate this week.

Breakfast: 1 cup of Barbara’s High Fiber Medley Original and TIU Bombshell spell

Mid-morning snack: Blueberry protein chia muffins (So good!)

Lunch: K & Kale salad – kale, sliced red peppers, red onion and carrots topped with chicken and dressed with balsamic dressing.

Afternoon snack: Sliced red peppers, baby carrots and celery with a pesto dip.

Dinner: Chickpea pasta with butter (used sparingly), a tiny bit of olive oil and black pepper. I made one other dinner last week, but I can’t remember what it was!

The Workouts

The workouts were a mix of strength training or HIIT followed by cardio a few days a week. The longest workout was 40 minutes and the shortest was 25. I’m a huge fan of the TIU workouts, so I knew this portion of the plan wouldn’t be a problem. All of the workouts can be done at home with minimal equipment – dumbbells, a yoga mat, resistance bands. The videos didn’t disappoint. I was sore by the end of the week, but in a good way. I can already see more definition in my arms.

Overall Impression

I was happy with my consistency. I got in all of my workouts and I stuck to the meal plan with just a few minor slip-ups. The hardest part for me has been the meal prep. While it makes the rest of my week much easier, it takes a lot of time on Sunday to chop my vegetables, cook my meat and prepare my snacks. That’s taken some getting used to. I have enjoyed the minimal cooking during the week though.

That’s it for week one of the Bikini Series challenge. Week two is already in full swing. I’ll post a recap next week.

TIU Bikini Series 2017

It’s been over a year, but I found my way back to this blog. I got engaged, bought a house, got married and adopted a dog. A lot has changed and as busy as life has been, I missed this place, so I’m back.

Although things may be different on the outside, not much has changed when it comes to health and fitness. Exercise and healthy eating have continued to be important parts of my life and I’m now gearing up for the Tone it Up 2017 Bikini Series challenge. I’ve been a TIU nutrition plan member for about two years now and I loosely did the challenge last year, but didn’t blog about it. This year I’m going to track my progress here.

For anyone who doesn’t know about the Bikini series, it’s a free 8 week fitness and lifestyle challenge with daily workouts, healthy recipes, social media check-ins and prizes. It starts April 24th, so if you haven’t signed up yet there’s still time!

As a TIU member, I was able to purchase the TIU bikini bundle at a discounted price. The bundle includes exclusive digital workouts and some awesome swag to get you ready and motivated to rock the challenge. I can’t wait to start! If you’re interested in learning more about the workouts and meal plan stop by here for weekly updates.

See you soon!

I’m Engaged!

I know I have been a horrible blogger and I have not kept up with posting at all in the last few weeks, but I had to stop in and share some exciting news. I’m engaged!

Vera Wang engagement ring

Brian proposed to me last Tuesday (July 14th), which also happened to be my 28th birthday. Needless to say, it was a night to remember. When I came home from work that day, he had set up a scavenger hunt with little gifts and notes that eventually led me to this beautiful ring. I am SO excited and have already become absolutely addicted to Pinterest for wedding planning. As of now, we are thinking of an October 2016 wedding. I live in Massachusetts, which is beautiful in the fall and I can’t imagine a better time of year for wedding photos.

If any of you married readers out there have any advice on planning a wedding, let me know!.

For now, I’m going to enjoy being engaged and hopefully start blogging on a regular basis again!

Friday Favorites

Friday Favorites 6/26

Happy Friday! Today is my last day at my current job. My lovely coworkers took me out for drinks last night and it was definitely a night to be remembered. I’m happy and sad at the same time. I’m happy to be starting a new adventure, but sad to leave behind so many great people. I do ultimately believe I’m making the right decision though to move on.

Anyway, enough about work stuff. Let’s get to my Friday Favorites. As always, I invite you to play along in the comments and share some of your favorite things from the week.

Gone Girl

Gone Girl

I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out and I thought it was great. I had read the book too and even though it’s not my favorite Gillian Flynn novel, I did really enjoy it. Brian and I watched Gone Girl again this week and I liked it just as much the second time around.

H&M Bikini

Love this pattern! Even better, the top is only $17.50. I have a vacation planned to Florida soon and I’m thinking this bikini would make an excellent addition to my suitcase.

Of course I had to throw in a nail polish lol. Is anyone surprised? I switched out my new Essie Peach Side Babe for Mod Squad two days ago and I’m loving it!
